So trying to be objective about them is difficult. It's fine to be able to say "I'm more likely to die from a bee sting than a shark bite", or be "run over by a car." And yet, it doesn't really help, does it?

Around Australia we are blessed with a magnificent marine environment and in order for that to stay healthy it needs to stay in balance. To stay in balance it needs to have top predators as well as all the rest. If we upset natures balance we find ourselves subject to various degrees of tropic cascading, which is the domino effect that causes other populations of plants and animals to fall when a link in the chain is broken. Losing too many sharks puts our truly amazing underwater world in serious trouble.

"As the top predators (like sharks) decline, a cascade of negative effects ripples through the entire ecosystem." CBS NEWS April 14, 2017, 3:48 PM Nature up close: Sharks

The Sunrise show had a recent item that highlighted the facts around those 'protective' shark nets and drum lines near big populations of people. You can view information about the Sunrise item by following this link https://7news.com.au/sunrise/on-the-show/why-thousands-of-sea-creatures-are-dying-off-the-coast-of-australia-c-1375061?fbclid=IwAR2o5qm5SDixn6hwlsjVtAHur7Z6tfl7GJjVRqDtK8kpmHkokPNDKOY0Xko

A quick overview of the Sunrise article allows the viewer to understand that the new documentary "Envoy Shark Cull" has the intent to show that current "Beach Protection" strategies underlined by shark nets and drum lines are based on culling practices rather than actually protecting swimmers and surfers.

It seems that government data shows that the shark nets kill thousands of other animals (by-catch) that vastly outweigh the number of sharks the program wants to catch. Ugly examples of the by-catch are in the news regularly. The large number of dead and dying animals actually attract sharks. It doesn't guarantee that the sharks get caught in those nets either. In the case of drum lines, the lines are formally baited with food for sharks.

Of note it is important to understand that shark nets are open at both ends and they do not reach the bottom so actually any shark can come within a netted area. An example occurred at a highly protected beach, Greenmount QLD, in Sept 2020 where a fatal shark bite occurred.

OK so what strategies might work better?

Off the coast of Ballina, NSW they have recently harnessed new technology to assist in mitigating negative shark encounters. There has already been a successful result demonstrated. Early in Oct 2020 a drone was monitoring a surfing beach. It identified large shark in the water near a surfer and broadcast a message to him that the shark was nearby. Subsequently the surfer was able to avoid an uncomfortable shark encounter. Later on viewing the drone's footage (which has since gone viral blob:https://7news.com.au/b1cdd21c-07a2-4ef6-bb7c-1bb47efd52e3) he admitted he had been surprised to note how close the shark had been.

Answers aren't easy but from this armchair vantage point however I'm willing to suggest that more non-lethal protection for people in the water is an essential part in answering the question "What can we do about sharks?"

In the meantime remember.....

www.ausmepa.org.au

AUSMEPA Marine Educationhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16413009950271793249noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3942946557495651321.post-7375191711930471462019-12-22T13:07:00.001-08:002019-12-22T13:07:44.265-08:00Educators: International Ocean Literacy Portal
The Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of UNESCO is pleased to announce the launch of the Ocean Literacy Portal. This Portal has been developed to provide a one-stop shop for ocean literacy worldwide, by sharing existing global ocean knowledge. The resources will be accessible to citizens worldwide, from different backgrounds and of all ages, from students to educators, from researchers to policy makers.

Ocean literacy is defined as the understanding of our influence on the ocean and the ocean’s influence on us. Ocean literacy is a way not only to increase the awareness of the public about the ocean, but it is as an approach to encourage all citizens and stakeholders to have a more responsible and informed behaviour towards the ocean and its resources. It is not just knowledge about the state of the ocean but a deeper understanding of our individual and collective responsibilities to take care of the ocean.

The ocean literacy framework and approach has been developed by a group of educators and scientists in the United States, and then taken up, and adapted by European, Asian and African scientists and educators. While all these organizations and associations have been critical to promote ocean literacy nationally and regionally, the need for an international collaboration and exchange of good practices and experiences led to the engagement of UNESCO in ocean literacy, both through its Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) and its Education Sector.

The high-level United Nations Conference to Support the Implementation of Sustainable Development Goal 14: Conserve and Sustainably Use the Oceans, Seas and Marine Resources for Sustainable Development, convened at United Nations Headquarters in New York from 5 to 9 June 2017, provided the platform to further promote the ocean literacy concept and framework internationally. A voluntary commitment #OceanAction15187, “Ocean Literacy for All: A Global Strategy to Raise the Awareness for the Conservation, Restoration, and Sustainable Use of Our Ocean”, was submitted by UNESCO in partnership with many institutions and other relevant partners. The main aim of the initiatives outlined in the Voluntary Commitment is to develop a global partnership to improve public knowledge across the world citizenry regarding our global ocean.

In this context, IOC has, at the occasion of the 51st session of its Executive Council, launched the Ocean Literacy Portal, developed with the support of the Government of Sweden. The Portal will serve as one-stop shop for ocean literacy worldwide to share resources, news and information about events and projects that are relevant for all ocean stakeholders, from different backgrounds and of all ages. The Portal has been built to respond to the need of the ocean literacy community to have access to educational resources that are based on rigorous scientific knowledge, that cover different themes, e.g. marine litter, ocean observation, marine policy, and that are useful for different users, such as educators, scientists, journalists, policy-makers and representatives of the private sector.

In addition, the Portal users will have the opportunity to register for a collaborative workspace. Through the Ocean Literacy Collaborative Workspace – UNESTEAMS, experts from all around the world will be able to work directly with fellow members by co-working on topics and ideas and co-creating and developing new joint projects. This is a further step towards creating a collaborative network.

“It is our hope that this platform will contribute to further information and communication regarding the understanding of our ocean,” said Francesca Santoro, IOC Programme Specialist in charge of ocean literacy activities.

The Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of UNESCO is working to prepare the Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development. At the IOC’s Executive Council in Paris, member states approved the roadmap, in which ocean literacy plays a central role. There is a need to commit to a greater investment in ocean science, to encourage the scientific community, the public and policy makers to think ahead and aspire to real change. The decade will help us deliver the ocean we need for the future we want. Youth will be central in this process.

From 3 to 6 July 2018, the 51st session of the Executive Council of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of UNESCO undertook major scientific and policy discussions and deliberated on important themes. On the agenda: ocean science requirements for addressing climate uncertainty, ocean observations and data, early warning and preparedness against tsunamis, multiple stressors affecting marine life, and strategies and tools for science-based ocean planning.

Furthermore, one of the main drives was to define the action plan in view of the Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030), proclaimed by the United Nations to gather ocean stakeholders worldwide under a common framework that will ensure ocean science can fully support countries in the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goal 14 on the ocean.

The proclamation of the decade was made necessary because of the increasing need to support and encourage the many aspects of ocean science, especially due to current data on ocean health. As mandated by the UN General Assembly, IOC is coordinating the decade’s preparatory process, inviting the global ocean community to plan for the next 10 years in ocean science and technology to give new generations a chance to live in a sustainable planet.

After the debate, the 39 Member States of the Executive Council – acting on behalf of the 149 Member States of the IOC – as well as observers unanimously voted in favour of initiatives aimed to emphasize the importance of marine sciences for society. According to Francesca Santoro, IOC Programme Specialist, “the objective is to have people understand the importance of oceanography, and that ocean sciences are fundamental in ocean-related services such as fishing, transport and tourism”.

If oceanography is of utmost importance, so is education to raise awareness and forge minds. Ocean Literacy is an essential component of the Ocean Science Decade. Member states voiced the importance of youth in this process. The IOC project office at the UNESCO Regional Bureau for Science and Culture in Europe, Venice (Italy), is focusing on Ocean Literacy and currently introducing it into school curricula in 36 countries around the world.

“All countries are now aware that our ocean is in danger, making decisions is urgent and we must act. Most of all, we must transform knowledge and scientific research in concrete actions”, said Santoro. “We aim to engage private sectors, politics and all citizens to create a deep-rooted sense of common knowledge”.

“With a greater understanding of the science, we must also reinforce our work on ocean literacy, so that decision-makers can fully take advantage of scientific research in order to affect real policy change.” , said UNESCO Director-General, Audrey Azoulay, at the opening of the 51st Session of the IOC Executive Council.

Our life and scientific research are closely connected. It is thanks to scientific research that we can make marine weather forecasting today, and detect tsunamis in advance to issue warnings in areas, which are subject to such environmental events. This is only one of the many examples as to how scientific research and our daily lives are closely connected.

Walter Munk, a pioneer in ocean research, was ready to remind us of this strong relation in occasion of the Roger Revelle Memorial Lecture held on 5 July during the IOC Executive Council. “The Allies put their strength and knowledge together, working for a common goal, reversing the outcome of the war”, disclosed Walter Munk. His work during World War II focused on wave forecasting and calculation may seem trivial, but in reality, it was essential for American boats to reach the beaches safely.

According to the 100-year-old scientist Munk, working together for a common goal is the key to facing the challenges of ocean pollution and global warming. It is vital to turn scientific research into concrete action. In the words of HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco, more than ever protecting the ocean requires us to think globally and collectively. We must join our forces, share our knowledge and embrace the cause of the Ocean to shape a future where humankind and seas benefit from each other.

During the plenary, Rosalia Santoleri, president of the Italian Oceanographic Commission, announced that Italy will be taking part in the preparations for the Decade. A workshop involving all nations facing the Mediterranean Sea will be planned, with coordination from Rome, and an agenda of initiatives starting January 2021 will be laid out.

The ocean is yet to be explored. Only 5% of the ocean floor has been mapped at high resolution and it is estimated that 1 million marine species are still unknown to science. Regardless of the great amount of research available today, our knowledge is still insufficient to manage biodiversity in 99% of habitable marine environments There are only 3 people in the world who have explored the deepest known point of the ocean. This information alone should be motivation enough to start acting and not only to respect our ocean, but also to discover it. We can all be a part of it, 2021 is not far off.

If you don't get a feel for this word perhaps you've heard the term interdependence, another mouthful, or more specifically, ecosystem services. The invisible axiomatic truth is that pretty much everything is connected to everything else. That may be in a primary sense, right here right now, or manifest as a kind of ripple effect off to the side or into the future. Simplistically we might refer to this as a domino effect.

The images below illustrate how we NEED to have healthy environmental systems, plants and animals, in order to have a chance for healthy lives ourselves. And sometimes, as in the case of Mangroves, we have for many years simply treated them with disdain. Below you can see a summary, written for a US audience, of how mangroves help us and what threatens them.

This earth we live on has such a complex, diverse and enigmatic web of interconnected effects. Everything we do affects this place we live.

People have been working on understanding what when why and how these connections work over the entire evolution of humankind. Which are the things that effect our health and well-being and those things that are detrimental.

Human inventiveness and adaptability has affected those natural systems and their often hidden interconnections have affected our planet. Fire gave us comfort, better health and protection from animals who might eat us and it can burn forests down. Being able to grow crops has given us a steady food source and it has drained rivers and polluted receiving waters and lead to a changed pattern of eating.

Who would have thought that it took about 3,000 litres of water to get that yummy burger into your mouth?

The more there are of us, the more changes we make. The statistics tell us that there are about 7.7 billion people on earth today, an increase of 6.1 billion people in only 117 years. The environmental systems that make the world habitable for us, producing breathable air, food, clean water, ARE struggling under the weight of our human numbers.

Is the climate changing? Well, clearly, it always does. Are we affecting the changing climate in ways that are different to past history? How could we not with the burgeoning number of people on the planet?

Humankind are such smart creatures. It's time to take stock of our interconnectedness. We will need to pull in our belts and make some brave decisions to look after mother earth and the cradle of the sea in order to ensure our own life on earth.

The Redmap website invites you to share sightings of fish and marine critters that you think are ‘uncommon’ and do not usually live along your coastline. Over time, Redmap will use your ‘citizen science’ data and photos to sketch a picture of Australian fish and marine species that may be extending their distribution range – a.k.a shifting house - in response to changes in the marine environment, such as warming seas.

Redmap allows Australians to collect their own marine data, share stories and upload photos of ‘unusual’ sightings. Redmap is science created by the people for the people

It is really exciting to see what people discover and how things are changing in the ocean.
Every year, hundreds of people take part in Victoria's largest marine citizen science event to create a snapshot of the species that call Victoria's coastal waters home

This year, the Ornate Cowfish is the 'face' of the Great Victorian Fish Count, Victoria's largest marine citizen science event. These colourful cowfish remind everyone that our marine life rocks and with many opportunities to explore the Great Southern Reef and other spectacular natural marine habitats all along Victoria's coast during the fish count, who knows what else you'll find out there.

The Great Victorian Fish Count is on from 16 November to 15 December, so it's time to jump in the water now!

Following a successful presentation at The World Maritime University in Malmo, AUSMEPA Executive Office, Julie Nash traveled on to Greece where she met with founding INTERMEPA members the Helenic Marine Environment Protection Association - HELMEPA

HELMEPA and AUSMEPA have a special bond. AUSMEPA, formed in the year 2000, is one of many offshoots from the original innovative Greek association formed in 1982.

That's 37 years of educating, acting and changing behaviour!

Biodiversity creates a balance, a give and take, that gives our lives stability and health. These and other marine systems protect biodiversity, one of the keys to humanities survival.

Our very good friends in South Australia put out a great newsletter and like many of us they are focusing on biodiversity month. They brought up some very good points in their recent article.

"strong urban ecosystems – including a wide variety of native plants, animals and insects that enhance biodiversity values – are good for the humans who live in our cities and suburbs. The more variation in vegetation, the more variation in the animal life it will attract – which in turn increases valuable ‘services’ such as plant pollination. Scientists are beginning to find evidence that being in nature has a profound impact on our brains and our behaviour. It helps reduce anxiety and stress, boosts our attention span and creativity, and increases our ability to connect with other people"

Having healthy coastal and marine waters also provides us, and other animals, with life sustaining services. The health of these systems is eroding. We see it almost everyday on the internet and on the news but what can we do about that? We live on the land and that marine environment is way out there under the water!

What we CAN do is be mindful of our choices on the land since everything we do on the land affects the sea sooner or later! We can be proactive and make some changes to encourage better biodiversity locally; at your house, on your street and in your community.

1. Eliminate or reduce the use of pesticides and fertilizers which leach off the land and into the stormwater run-off. Check online to see if you can find some of the do it yourself remedies for garden issues.
• worm farms can chew up kitchen waste while giving you back nutrients for the garden.
• composting your garden refuse provides a circle of life right in your own yard.
3. Examine what you actually NEED to get by and reduce your consumption. Walking down the street past shops one can wonder how in the world people buy so much stuff! The thrift shops do pretty well out of those excesses but unfortunately most all of our relentless spending ends up in our overwhelmed tips and garbage dumps. Buy second hand and look for things that will last.

4. Use your imagination and find alternative solutions to avoid single use plastics. Single use plastics have become an ocean scourge affecting the lives of marine animals and the general health of the sea. Most everything we buy has waste packaging that can become a death sentence in the environment.

Humans are adaptable. That's how we have come as far as we have. With some simple habit changes and actions we can definitely change our impact on our over stressed world and encourage local biodiversity.
each other in many instances, what lead you to this niche space?

<span style="color: #222222; font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">A: This is a
really great question! Engineering and the environment are often seen to be at
odds, but so much of what we know about engineering stems from nature. There is
a significant shift towards adopting more nature based solutions in engineering
and I think that it is fantastic and something I’ve pursued as part of my
research. My research actually led to my career at Covey Associates and led me
to this niche space. As an environmental scientist in the engineering field, my
role is to work out science-based solutions to difficult engineering questions.
I work really closely with some amazing civil engineers and researchers to
address some complex questions and it’s a great role and experience.

We aim to add value to the developments we work in and we think stormwater treatment can be an opportunity to provide this.
try something different. I had been involved with floating wetland design and
research at sites in Gladstone and Bribie Island and the data suggested it
would work on a larger scale. In close collaboration with the developer of
Parklakes 2 and Council, we developed an approach that we believed would suit.

performance indicator is how the floating wetland plant roots remove pollutants
from stormwater runoff. The roots are the most critical component of
event-based treatment, as they disperse flow velocity and promote settlement
and ‘trapping’ of stormwater pollutant (i.e. suspended solids). The biggest
issue we’ve had on site is that during the events, the pollutant concentrations
coming into the system are so low, it’s difficult to assess the performance. If
you’ve got clean water coming in and clean water going out, it’s not easy to
say it’s removing much.
the successful mitigation of runoff pollution from greenfield sites like these?

<span style="color: #222222; font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">A: There are
several things that could impact successful treatment of runoff. First, poor
design of a treatment system. If it is not sized appropriately, it won’t
function effectively. Second, not taking into account the type of development.
Certain treatment approaches are suitable for certain development types and not
suitable for others. There needs to be careful consideration as to how the
community will ultimately view the treatment asset. I also feel that trying to
establish custodianship within the community is a great way to get people to
think about their impacts and adapt behaviours to reduce pollution. There are a
range of other things that could impact the successful implementation of a
water treatment system in a greenfield development, but those two issues, in my
opinion, are some of the most critical.

<span style="color: #222222; font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">A: They certainly
are. The biggest impact that climate change might have on floating wetland
systems is prolonged drought. As these systems need water to function, it’s
critical that they are implemented in appropriate places. It’s unlikely to be
successful in arid regions of the outback, that is for sure. But on the other
end of the spectrum, they do quite well in severe storm situations, as they
fluctuate upwards with the water level. The most critical thing there is the
anchor design and we’ve learned a lot from some trials and tribulations in the
earlier days of the floating wetland installation at Parklakes 2.

<span style="color: #222222; font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">A: The lakes are
designed for passive, not active recreations. We didn’t want to put fences up
as it creates a very sterile and unwelcoming outcome. We do have some fences
around the floating wetlands, but this was largely due to the fact Council was
not entirely sure as to how the community would react to a large scale system.
In lieu of fences, we’ve created passive barriers to the lakes through dense,
lake-edge vegetation. Not only does this create an aesthetic outcome, it also
creates critical riparian habitat, which is really important from an ecological
perspective.
<span style="color: #073763; font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Q: Within your context, has
thought been given to seasonal migration and wildlife corridors through the

<span style="color: #222222; font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: EN-AU;">A:This is an
interesting question! I think it needs to be considered in the context of the
pre-development scenario. Prior to Parklakes 2, the site was a cane field,
which is obviously serving an agricultural purpose and not one that generally
promotes biodiversity or wildlife movement. With the creation of the lakes,
this presents a unique habitat for birds that was not present previously. So in
the case of Parklakes 2, there was no real protected corridors on the site.
Generally speaking, however, I firmly believe that if there are existing
wildlife corridors that may be impacted by a development, all due care and
consideration should go into the design to mitigate these impacts and recreate,
or better, enhance the corridors.

<span style="color: #073763; font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Q: In regard to the
"proof of the pudding," how does biodiversity in the lakes compare to
other water collection basins near developments that do not have floating
treatments.

<span style="color: #222222; font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">A: We’re not
actually sure, but again, a great question. It’s presumed that the floating
wetlands will provide enhanced habitat, as it will allow juvenile fish to have
a ‘safe space’ to grow to maturity, lessening the likelihood of predation by
waterfowl species and similar. It’s not a key component of the research
project, as the critical driver was water quality improvement. It would be
great to get some additional research into this space, however.

Kangaroo Island is a true icon of the State of South Australia. With a wealth of land and sea vistas it is a must see destination for anyone who loves nature and the outdoors.

AUSMEPA's Jody Plecas had the very great pleasure of traveling there this past month. And it was with some trepidation she nudged her car in amongst the throng of traffic making the journey across on the SEALINK ferry!

However she came home singing the praises of the SEALINK deckhands that guided her and her car onto the packed ferry amongst cars, boats, cattle trucks and more. Then they deftly and efficiently helped her safely disembark onto this beautiful landmark island.

While traveling across the water with them she couldn't help but notice the Community Link poster that showed how SEALINK is supporting the community too!

AUSMEPA is very proud to have SEALINK as a sponsor.
On a recent trip to Kangaroo Island off the coast of South Australia we found many wonderful wildlife opportunities for visitors, including Seal Bay mid way along the islands southern coastline.

One of those special was where visitors have the chance to take a tour of the wild beaches where the endangered Australian sea lion colony is.

"The only place in the world where visitors are able to enter a wild colony of approximately 1000 Australian Sea Lions - one of the rarest species in the world."

Fees are charged for tours however it goes back into research and protection of the animals.

AUSMEPA loves kids and it was pure delight to see that students are highly engaged when it comes to pinnipeds (seals and sea lions).

Here is some of the classy student artwork displayed at the visitors centre.
And more power to them! One we haven't seen before is Oyster Watch and in some ways you'd think this could have been an early one considering how much people love oysters. Then again maybe that's why not.

Oyster Watch was initiated as a result of the well recorded history of Melbourne and Port Phillip Bay's early ocean bounty. There is no doubt that European settlement brought disastrous changes for the oyster communities.
With the advent of Victoria's new marine parks a wonderful thing happened. Friends groups, local volunteers, appeared on the scene with the aim of supporting the new marine parks and keeping an eye on the health and well being of these special places. Scientists soon recognised the value of training volunteers to learn and record what they could about the marine environment to assist them in data collection. The volunteers generally find a proprietary interest building inside them to protect these special places as they learn.

For many years now Victoria has been trying to turn that around. Just before the no-take marine parks and sanctuaries were declared the inter-tidal zone was designated as a protected area for oysters and other invertebrate animals with the exception of marine worms. At the seashore compliance to the law is very challenging.

Oyster Watch is a great new addition to our growing community awareness, data resource collection and positive action for the health of our coasts. Let's hope other places around Australia consider taking this idea on-board also.
WHAT'S THAT?<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Recently there has been more and more reference to the Blue Economy, appearing in Gunter Pauli's book "The Blue Economy, 10 years, 100 Innovations, 100 Million Jobs" and his Zero Emissions Research Initiatives: (ZERI).
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">On the Permies website here Wesley Roe posted the following 8 years ago...

<span style="background-color: #ebdcc5; font-family: "droid sans" , sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">Gunter Pauli suggests by emulating nature we can evolve from an economy based on scarcity to an economy based on abundance---the cascading, nutrient rich, Blue Economy. Founder of Zero Emissions Research Initiatives (ZERI) Global Network, Gunter Pauli pioneered the <span style="background-color: yellow; font-family: "droid sans" , sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">concept of waste being seen as a resource<span style="background-color: #ebdcc5; font-family: "droid sans" , sans-serif; font-size: 14px;"> that with creative thinking, can be used to create multiple enterprises from singular ones, with benefits for the economy and the environment. Pauli is fond of saying that returns on investment from these kinds of business models far exceed those of companies like Microsoft.
<span style="background-color: #ebdcc5; font-family: "droid sans" , sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">

<span style="background-color: #ebdcc5; font-family: "droid sans" , sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">The Blue Economy began as a project to find one hundred of the best nature-inspired technologies that could effect the economies of the world, while sustainably providing basic human needs. Starting with over 2000 peer review articles, Dr. Pauli found 340 innovations that could be bundled into systems that function the way ecosystems do, that were then reviewed by a team of scientists, corporate strategists, expert financiers, and public policy makers. For the 100 Innovations described, The Blue Economy estimates an employment potential of 100 million jobs. The plausibility of this estimate is enhanced by the fact that there are today more people employed in renewable energies than in the oil and gas<span style="background-color: #ebdcc5; font-family: "droid sans", sans-serif; font-size: 14px;"> <span style="background-color: #ebdcc5; font-family: "droid sans", sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">industries combined.

A terrific enhancement of this theory is the inclusion of the notion of Biomimicry, "the design and production of materials, structures, and systems that are modelled on biological entities and processes.".
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The Ocean Literacy project has been in play for many years. Although it began and has been developed in the northern hemisphere an AUSMEPA consultant along with other Aussies had the opportunity to participate in its early stage development and later promoting its value within Australian marine education.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Over the last 3 years an unfunded survey planning project, the International Ocean Literacy Survey (IOLS) was developed with the help of a vast array of top notch researchers, communicators, teachers and more.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The IOLS is now ready to roll out and we need the help of teachers and students in Australia to add value to the standard of Ocean Literacy across the world. <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">To learn more about <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">pedagogical practices for<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"> <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Ocean Literacy see here<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">.
Australia has long been known as a land of contrasts. This has never been demonstrated better than in
recent years. Throughout 2018 we
have been inundated with unusually disastrous
or cataclysmic natural events, drought, storm and fire that exceed cyclic expectations.

We learn about these shattering news events from a land-based perspective however little perspective is provided as to the effects on our coastal waters in the aftermath other than the occasional aerial footage. There is no easily available information to holistically
explain what happens in the ocean and yet the
effects of almost everything that happens on the land has a large impact on the health of the
ocean. We can infer that major events may have massive impacts.

Storms

Extreme weather can be devastating. Each drop of rain is an
explosion hitting earth. Raindrops pummel and scour the land during any storm but even more so during extreme events. The
aftermath sees trees down, crops ruined, debris across flooded roads, severe erosion, animals and plants in
shock or dead.

Waterways and drains become clogged thoroughfares for debris, sediments, and poisonous chemicals, dragged downward by gravity until the
water can go no further. All of those watery passengers can be classed as
natural debris or non-natural pollution.

Any keen snorkeler, diver or surfer can tell you that the water is much
cleaner and clearer during times of drought and that storms following a drought
make it much harder to know what is in the water. In fact shark experts
pointedly advise against swimming near murky stormwater outlets, streams or
rivers following bad weather as opportunistic sharks will be looking for quick
snacks in stormwaters.

Drought

Plants hold the land together with their roots, when removed the dirt
particles shift and move easily with wind and water causing severe erosion. Storms
can pull riparian vegetation away to cause erosion however drought is also the
cause of erosion as plants to die of thirst and lose their grip on the
soil.

Fire

Thunderstorms bring not only the threat of flooding but also lightning strike and fire. When a fire devastates the land, as it has around
Australia this past year, plants die, cinders and smoke are lifted into the air and deposited surfaces everywhere i.e. forests, paddocks, buildings, roads, roofs. The wind and rain eventually wash those deposited chemicals and particles into the nearest river, stream or drain. Affected waterways carry a higher concentration
of contaminants from the catchment in disaster run-off. The waterway becomes a poisonous highway straight down into the ocean, poisoning and smothering inhabitants.

Land changes

What is the ripple effect from fierce disasters like
drought, storms and forest fires and how do they affect the health of our ocean
territory (200 nautical miles surrounding Australia). Perhaps an equally telling question is what
happens to us if our ocean is unwell, corals die, fish numbers drop, turtle and
iconic species are lost or ecosystems fail?

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">According to an ABC article saying that this year we have achieved the Earth Overshoot Day in just seven months.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Oh my goodness! And it appears that Australia is one of the per capita leaders in shortening the length of time to reach Overshoot Day, according to the Global Footprint Network statistics.
